"Byobu" is a Japanese folding screen traditionally used not only as a room-partition but also to emphasize one's authority, For the latter purpose, those who had reached high seats of power in ancient times hired the best-known painters of the time to decorate their screens in a gorgeous, stately style unlike anything that had been seen before. Byobu as pictorial art has played an important role in the history of Japanese architecture and indoor decoration. Since early times, such outdoor scenes as birds, flowers and trees have been depicted on byobu. This may be said to have been rooted in the emotions which the Japanese have directed toward the natural world.
